Gene Technology Policy
The CRC for Innovative Dairy Products strongly supports the Australian dairy industry position on the introduction of genetically modified (GM) foods.
The industry's position is that GM foods will not be introduced to consumers without rigorous testing under regulations set by the Office of the Gene Technology Regulator or without consumer acceptance. The industry recognises the need to assess potential risks as well as benefits in gene technology and to offer supply chain choice.
Any GM food-related technologies that may emerge from the CRC's research would also be subject to Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) regulations applying to all foods, including GM foods, introduced into the market place. GM foods are regulated by Standard 18 of the Australian Food Standards Code.
